Black Stars forward Andre Ayew is being used by his side West Ham United as a sweetener in a deal to sign Swansea City centre back Alfie Mawson according to reports in The Mirror.

David Moyes’ side is desperately in need of defensive reinforcements, after the long term injury to Jose Fonte, and has made Mawson their prime target in January.

Ayew, 27, joined the Hammers last season from Swansea for a then record fee of £20m but has struggled to live up to that price tag, much to the frustration of the Hammers faithful.

Ayew’s struggles have continued since Moyes took over, with Andy Carroll and Javier Hernandez preferred to the Ghanaian.

With Swansea reportedly open to Ayew’s possible return which will also see him reunite with younger brother Jordan for the first time since their time together at Marseille, West Ham are said looking to use the out of favour Ghanaian to sway the Swans into forgoing Mawson.
