World Cup-winning goalkeeper Hope Solo has announced she is running for president of the US Soccer Federation.

The 36-year-old earned 202 caps for her country and won the 2015 Women’s World Cup plus two Olympic gold medals during her 17-year international career.

She has not played for the national side since the Rio Olympics, after receiving a six-month ban for calling rivals Sweden “a bunch of cowards”.

Cristiano Ronaldo (pictured) and Lionel Messi have both won the award five times

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo beat Barcelona's Lionel Messi to win the Ballon d'Or award for the fifth time - and the second year in a row.

Victory took the 32-year-old Portugal international level with 30-year-old Argentine Messi, who won the most recent of his five awards in 2015.

Messi's ex-Barcelona team-mate Neymar, now at Paris St-Germain, was third.

Serena Williams has entered the Australian Open in January, tournament director Craig Tiley has said. The 36-year-old won this year's event in Melbourne while in the early weeks of pregnancy and gave birth to a daughter in September.

Tiley told the Herald Sun the 23-time Grand Slam winner is "very likely" to return to tennis in Melbourne.

"She's got her visa, she's entered, she's practising," he said. "There's no question she'll be ready in our view."

Bayern ended the group stage having won all their home games

France midfielder Corentin Tolisso scored twice to earn Bayern Munich victory but Paris St-Germain advance to the Champions League last-16 draw as Group B winners.

Bayern needed to win by four goals to finish above PSG and they got off to a fine start with Robert Lewandowski's close-range finish after eight minutes.

Arsenal teenager Eddie Nketiah has signed a new "long-term" deal at the club.

The 18-year-old announced himself to supporters when he scored two goals after coming off the bench to rescue Arsenal a 2-1 win in their Carabao Cup tie against Norwich in October.

Nketiah is one of three Arsenal youngsters to have committed their futures to the club on Wednesday, with Matt Macey and Ben Sheaf also signing new contracts.

Manchester United came from behind to beat CSKA Moscow and top their Champions League group as Jose Mourinho’s men took their unbeaten home run to a club record-equalling 40th match.

It always appeared a case of when rather than if United would progress to the last-16 for the first time since 2013-14, despite their winning start to Group A ending with their last-gasp defeat at Basel.

Mark Clattenburg booked nine Tottenham players in May 2016

Mark Clattenburg says he allowed Tottenham to "self-destruct" in their 2-2 draw with Chelsea in May 2016, so that he could not be blamed for Leicester securing the Premier League title.

Tottenham needed to beat the reigning champions at Stamford Bridge if they were to retain any hope of stopping Leicester lifting the trophy.
