Arsenal have rejected a £50m bid from Premier League rivals Manchester City for forward Alexis Sanchez.

The 28-year-old, who scored 24 league goals last season, is out of contract next summer and wants to play for City manager Pep Guardiola.

Arsenal have rebuffed all approaches for Sanchez, and would like City's Raheem Sterling as part of any deal before Thursday's transfer deadline.

But Guardiola is understood to want the Chilean as a straight purchase.

Ottis Gibson is in his second spell as England's bowling coach

England bowling coach Ottis Gibson has confirmed he will leave his position to become head coach of South Africa.

The former West Indies player, 48, will replace Russell Domingo and starts his new role after the conclusion of the Test series against West Indies in September.

"Ottis is an ambitious man," said England director of cricket Andrew Strauss.

"When this opportunity presented itself it was difficult for him to turn down."

Liverpool have confirmed a deal to sign RB Leipzig's Naby Keita, with the midfielder moving to Anfield in July 2018.

The Reds have agreed to pay the £48m release clause that will allow the 22-year-old to move next summer, plus an undisclosed premium.

Keita had been one of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp's primary targets this summer, but Leipzig refused to sell.

The deal surpasses the record £35m paid to Newcastle for Andy Carroll in 2011.

Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is on the brink of joining Premier League champions Chelsea.

Oxlade-Chamberlain, 24, will be out of contract next summer and has refused to sign a new deal at Emirates Stadium.

Chelsea have declined to comment but it is understood they have agreed a transfer fee with their London rivals for the England international.

Liverpool have also shown an interest and could still make an offer for the former Southampton player.

Five-time champion Roger Federer needed five sets to overcome American teenager Frances Tiafoe in the first round of the US Open.

The 36-year-old Swiss won 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-6 6-4 in his first ever match under the Arthur Ashe Stadium roof.

Third seed Federer goes on to face Slovenia's Blaz Kavcic or Mikhail Youzhny of Russia on Thursday.

American middle-distance runner David Torrence has been found dead at the bottom of a swimming pool in Arizona at the age of 31.

Torrence won silver for the USA at the World Relay Championships in 2014 and claimed another second-placed finish at the Pan American Games in 2015.

He switched allegiances to represent Peru at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Venus Williams

Two-time champion Venus Williams was pushed all the way by world number 135 Viktoria Kuzmova before reaching the second round of the US Open.

The 37-year-old American took her second match point on teenager Kuzmova's serve to win 6-3 3-6 6-2.

Williams has seven Grand Slam singles titles, while Kuzmova was making her main-draw debut at tour level.

Meantime, two-time finalist Caroline Wozniacki beat Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-1 7-5 to reach round two.
