Ghana’s Finest 22 Players, a program designed to honor the most distinguished persons to have graced the turf, was officially launched at the Independence Square in Accra yesterday, April 18, 2017.
A total of fifty-five (55) players comprising five (5) players for each position have been selected by the committee, to be pruned to a final list of twenty two (22) players which will comprise two players for each position.
The shortlisting will be done with the help of the general public through voting. The list features the likes of Stephen Appiah, Kwasi Appiah, Ibrahim Sunday, current Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan, among others.
In his opening address, the Deputy Minster of Youth and Sports Pius Enam Hedzide congratulated the two institutions who are collaborating to put up the show; Primeval Media and F&B Media Group. He lauded them for the initiative to honor certain persons for their stellar contribution to football in Ghana.
“This program compliments the annual SWAG awards which also shows the nation’s appreciative to our gallant sports persons who, over the years, have lifted the flag of Ghana”, he stated.
A representative of Primeval and F&B Group, Fiifi Banson, highlighted how important sports is in uniting the country and the reason behind this initiative to honor past heroes.
According to him, the Ghana@60 committee was launched not only for our independence anniversary march but, it’s a year-long anniversary celebration.
The Head of the media sub-committee of the Ghana @60 anniversary celebration, Jefferson Sackey, in his address, officially endorsed the event as part of the Ghana@60 celebrations which aims at uniting the country over the course of this one-year celebration.
The event was graced by the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, former Ghana Football Association President, Alhaji M. N. D. Jawula, Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, George Afriyie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, The Head of Communications for Ghana@60, Jefferson Sackey and other high dignitaries in the sporting fraternity.
