The Enyimba shot-stopper says he feels sad for the Rosenborg man's pullout, but intends to go to the Afcon to ‘fight for his place’

Ghana goalkeeper Fatau Dauda is saddened by Adam Kwarasey's recent injury, despite having benefitted from the latter's withdrawal from the Black Stars' squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

Dauda, who recently signed for Nigerian club Enyimba, received a late call-up on Wednesday - coincidentally the last day for submission of final list of players for the continental gathering.

The former Ashanti Gold man has since joined Avram Grant's team in their pre-tournament camp in the United Arab Emirates.

“I am very sad for my brother Adam Kwarasey," Dauda said, as reported by My Joy Online.

"I was preparing to go to Nigeria and join my team for the pre-season when I had a call to come back to the Black Stars."

“I am not just going there to be a standby goalkeeper; I am going there to fight for a place in the starting team.

“I know all the goalkeepers are good so I have to work hard to secure a starting place.”

It is not Dauda's first time of profiting from Kwarasey's setback.

Following the Norway-born's nondescript performance at the 2012 Afcon, Dauda dislodged Kwarasey to the bench at the 2013 edition, manning the post in all matches as Ghana reached the last four.

Kwarasey fought to reclaim the No.1 spot ahead of the 2014 Fifa World Cup, only to be sent back to the bench in preference for Dauda following Ghana's opening day defeat to the USA.

At Gabon 2017, Dauda will compete against current No.1 Razak Brimah as well as Richard Ofori of local champions Wa All Stars for the starting spot.

Ghana will play in Group D alongside Egypt, Mali and Uganda.
