Ghanaian youth in recent times have raced entrepreneurship to the next level. Students on tertiary campus are pursuing entrepreneurial ventures while pursuing their education. Some of these business ventures include multimedia services [photography and videography], tech startups [all categories of blogging], beauty and make-up, retail of basic student feeding essentials [‘provisions’] and fashion lines [sales of clothes, shoes and bags].
One of such fashion and hand-craft brand making waves on the University of Cape Coast Campus is the ”Africana Market’’.
‘Africana Market’ is a fashion brand led by Agyemang Frimpong Samuel, a level 400 student at the University of Cape Coast [UCC] pursuing Bachelor Of Arts In Education.
Africana Market started with an original agenda of being part of a club, ‘the Africana Conference Club’ formed by Samuel Agyemang in 2015. After the club’s first conference, Samuel decided to pursue the dream of the ‘Africana Brand’ to see its growth potential.

According to Samuel Agyemang, the ‘Africana Market’ idea was created to provide a platform for students to purchase affordable high quality locally made clothes, shoes and sandals.
Africana market began before Samuel’s days on UCC campus. In Senior High School [SHS], Samuel sold slippers to his school mates to enable them present the best version of themselves at programs. The ‘Africana Market’ is a dream come true for Samuel Frimpong Agyemang.

Like humble beginnings, Africana Market started from a rented shop paid from Samuel’s own pocket money. He pleaded with his sister who knew and had most shoes makers in her network to support the business idea with a seed fund, pairs of feet wear and recommendation on shoe makers.
“When I say we, I mean I alone didn’t bring ‘Africana Market’ to this point, without the help of friends and families but most especially my close friend, Grace Nkrumah Adassah, the General Manager of Africana Market”, Samuel added.

Africana Market was nominated amongst the first ten entrepreneurs in UCC, Choice Awards 2017. Africana products are highly patronized by University staff and community as well as individuals in the Cape Coast Metropolis. Africana Market produces well-designed and finished hand-made unisex clothes, shoes and bags. The ’’Market’’ is located at the Nkrumah Hall Market at New Site Of UCC. We met with Sammy to learn about his student entrepreneurial journey.
