US President Donald Trump is reportedly about to announce his new United Nations ambassador — a former Fox News host with no policymaking experience.
Mr Trump will make the announcement in the coming hours that State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert will take up the plum role, Bloomberg reported, citing three sources.
Ms Nauert, 48, a former Fox News Channel correspondent and anchor as well as a mother, does not have prior political or policymaking experience.
She became the State Department spokeswoman in April last year and, earlier this year, was named the acting undersecretary for public diplomacy and public affairs.
Representatives at the White House and the State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
ABC News reported in November that Ms Nauert had been offered the job, but it was not clear at the time whether she had accepted.
Mr Trump earlier said his daughter, Ivanka, would be perfect for the role but conceded he’d be accused of nepotism if he appointed her.
Ms Nauert is described by US media as an “unorthodox choice” for the role due to her little experience in government or foreign policy.
She was a popular anchor on the Fox News show Fox and Friends, which Mr Trump was said to watch.
Ms Nauert is said to be good friends with Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner.
Bloomberg reports Ms Nauert was selected among a competitive field of candidates including former White House aide Dina Powell, ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft and ambassador to Germany Ric Grenell.
Outgoing UN Ambassador Nikki Haley announced her shock resignation in October, after holding the post for 18 months.
She described her time in the position as a “blessing” but did not give a reason for her unexpected departure, only saying that government officials must know “when it’s time to step aside”.
If Ms Nauert passes the Senate confirmation and subsequently assumes the role, her top priority will be to maintain sanctions on North Korea, which her predecessor managed to rally global support for last year when Kim Jong-Un was conducting his ballistic missile testing.
