A Professor with Institute For Afrikanistik in Frankfort, Prof Rainer Vossen has indicated that considering the major role language plays in expressing culture, its essence should not be downplayed.
He said many languages are at risk of extinction, therefore Africans should make conscious efforts to protect and preserve their culture through language documentation.
In an interaction with ATL FM NEWS on the sidelines of a seminar organised by University of Cape Coast [UCC] in collaboration with University of Education [UEW], Winneba and the Institute of For Afrikanistik in Germany, Prof. Dr. Rainer Vossen indicated that the responsibility of protecting African languages lies on Africans themselves.
On his part, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts Prof. Joseph Benjamin Archibald Afful commended the various universities for organizing such a seminar and said there was a lot that could be achieved as a nation from such collaborations. He called for the effective sustenance of such initiatives.
