Holy Child Senior High School has emerged winner of this year’s inter-schools debate organized by the Cape Coast Branch of the Ghana Science Association.

They garnered 90.2 points to beat their competitors, Edinaman Senior High school who had 83 points and Adisadel College who managed 82 points.

Speaking against the motion which was the use of mobile Phones being allowed in Schools, representatives of Holy Child Senior High School indicated the ills associated with the use of mobile phones at school. They cited the use of phones to perpetuate sexual immorality and the imminent danger it posed to the education of students. This made the team a preferred choice for the ultimate prize.

The champions were represented by Benedicta Nana Akua Yeboah and Paulina Selasie Kuukua Willson. For their prize, they each received a certificate of participation and an undisclosed amount of money. The team for Edinaman was represented by Erica Selassie Affram and Precious Addor. Team Adisadel had Isaac Ayeyi Turkson and David Ashitey. They both received plaques, certificates of participation and cash.

The President of the Ghana Science Association, Cape Coast Branch, Prof. Victor Y.A. Barku spoke to ATL FM News on the reason behind the competition.

“This programme was organized to whip out the interest of our young ones to study science and propagate the message that science and technology is the best growth for the development of the nation. We want to educate the public and other students that science is a subject of choice and that anyone can decide to study science. Without science, the nation will not develop. That’s our aim and agenda to continue doing this to motivate our young ones to pursue science”.

One participant from the winning school also spoke to ATL FM News about her impressions of the competition.

“I am grateful to God. It has not been easy though. Coming this far as a team, there were instances where we fell, disagreed but we came prepared and therefore thank God for making us win. We were a little bit scared coming to face Adisadel College but by God’s Grace we made it”.
