A summer school designed to nurture Ghana’s next generation of environmental entrepreneurs has begun on the University of Cape Coast campus in Cape Coast. The summer camp which began on Monday is expected to train participants on social entrepreneurship, social-business models, Ghana’s environmental challenges and solutions as well as leadership and soft skills.

The one-week intensive summer school exposes participants to the ominous plastic waste challenge Ghana faces, brainstorm and discover its economic, social and environmental impact. The summer school challenges the participants to initiate sustainable solutions to the problems.

The Coordinator of the summer school Abdul Rahim Shaibu-Issah, said there is the need to empower the youth in Cape Coast with necessary leadership and soft skills required to be change makers for Ghana’s future. The participants are expected to scale up the ‘Recycle Up Your School’ project in their various educational institutions to create a cleaner Ghana.

According to him, participants’ key take away will be knowledge on waste management, soft skill training (presentation skills, public speaking and communication).

Recycle Up Ghana is and initiative by the German-Ghanaian NGO Technology Without Borders (Technik ohne Grenzen e.v.) which has more than 6 years of project experience in waste management. Both European and Ghanaian members of the NGO support the initiative’s activities throughout the year, by providing the recycle up! ambassadors with mentoring, equipment and contacts to local waste management companies.

Recycle Up seeks to increase participants’ awareness of environmental issues, to provide a better understanding of the potential adverse societal effects implied by excessive plastic waste pollution as well as to develop a sustainable, local recycling solution preventing such.
