1 Killed as Robbers Engage in a Shootout with the Police

The Central Regional Police Command has arrested two robbers who were involved in a fierce shootout with the Police in the early hours of Thursday morning at Esuekyir, a suburb of Cape Coast in the Cape Coast North Constituency.

A stray bullet from the shootout killed a 38 year old woman, Mary Aboagye and injured her husband Okyere Aboagye who were both in a taxi cab.

The two arrested, namely Joseph Quansah aged 36 and Daniel Ewusi aged 32 who are on admission at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital after sustaining injuries in the shootout were part of four robbers who were in a BMW saloon car with registration number GT-4523- J on a robbery operation. Briefing the media, the Central Regional Police Commander DCOP Paul Manly Awini said robbers were being pursued by the Twifo Praso patrol team after police intelligence caught their activities.

According to the report, on reaching Praso and Jukwa barriers the suspected robbers damaged the barricades and sped off. The police then chased them to the Brimso barrier but all attempts to get them to surrender failed.

Upon reaching Ankaful the robbers initiated a shootout, which the police retaliated. Amidst the exchange at Esuekyir, a Taxi cab with registration number CR-523-17 was caught up between the police and the robbers vehicle, hence stray a bullet hit and killed Mrs Mary Aboagye and injured her husband Aboagye Okyere. A school girl, Cecilia Mensah aged 15 who stood by the road side also sustained injuries from other stray bullets.

Police indicate the two victims are on admission at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital respondind to treatment.

DCOP Paul Manly Awini, said the Inspector General of Police Mr. David Asante- Apeatu has directed the CID Headquarters in Accra to take over investigations.
