NHIS Rolls Out Mobile Membership Renewal Service

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has rolled out a mobile membership renewal service. The service will ensure registration to access health care is responsive, more convenient and hassle-free.

With this new innovation in operation, all registered members of the scheme, approximately 11 million people in the country, can use the service to check the status of their NHIS membership eligibility, the NHIS benefit packages and the NHIS medicines list.

Members have to dial a service code number of *842*10# to access the service.

At a stakeholders’ meeting yesterday in Cape Coast, the Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs at the NHIA, Oswald Essuah – Mensah, indicated the mobile membership renewal service will address some challenges within the health Insurance Scheme.

He indicated that with about sixty thousand (60 000) registrations a year through its 165 district offices, serious bottlenecks are experienced with consumables, infrastructure, sitting arrangements, overstretched staff (sometimes working 24 hours a day). These therefore prompted the authority to be innovative about addressing them.

Mr. Essuah-Mensah said the mobile renewal service is also intended to improve on the services of the authority and the relationship with its clients.

“Because we are in the public sector, people tend to think that we don’t care much about our members but at NHIA we want that to change and we are changing”.

He added the NHIS stands ready to work with the National Identification Authority (NIA) by connecting their systems to ensure that their services can be achieved with the use of Ghana Card for easy renewal by members.
