The Mfantseman Municipal Assembly in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare has disbursed about GHS 200,000 worth of items to over a 100 Persons With Disabilities (PWD) within municipality.

Capital for the disbursement was drawn from the Disability Common Fund.

The items ranged from deep freezers, sewing machines, hair dryers, fully stocked container kiosks, among others.

Some also received cheques of various sums of money, while others had their school fees and medical bills paid.

In a ceremony organized at Nankesedo at Saltpond on Wednesday to distribute the items to the beneficiaries, the Municipal Chief executive, Kenneth Kelly Essuman explained he will ensure that PWDs within his jurisdiction become self-sufficient under the tenure of the Akufo-Addo led government.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the event, Mr. Essuman further explained the new initiative which presents beneficiaries with the equipment they need to enhance their livelihood as opposed to the old system of presenting them with cash will ensure that more PWDs are enrolled on the Disability Common Fund Scheme.

He said there is a greater aim of establishing PWDs within the municipality and the country at large to make them self-dependent.

“These beneficiaries will now be weaned of the scheme because they are going to rely on themselves. They are going to be dependent on themselves.  So, as more and more people get rolled unto the scheme and the common fund is released and their portion get in, we will set them up. So gradually, you will see that all the disabled people in the country which Mfantseman municipal is part of will be established on their own and that is the vision we have”.

Speaking to ATL FM News, the head of Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mfantseman, Mrs. Felicia Ankrah-Halm advised the beneficiaries to make good use of the items and monies.
