Some irate youth of Ekumfi Eyisam in the Ekumfi district of the central region on Tuesday night vandalized the Mfantseman Police station.

ATL FM News gathers the act resulted in the injury of a police officer and the destruction of properties at the station.

The Mankessim Police Commander, Supt. Augustine Mensah, who narrated the incident to ATL FM News said at around 8:30 pm on Tuesday, Police officers at a snap check point at Abor stopped a taxi cab which was over loaded with people on a top speed.

At the next check point at Akoakrom, the occupants of the same taxi refused to stop and they sped off and slightly missed hitting one of the police officers by a hair’s breadth.

According to Supt. Mensah, this raised the suspicion of the police and they chased the taxi. On reaching Mankessim, they caught up with the vehicle.

Realizing the police had caught up with them, the occupants of the taxi fled leaving the taxi driver who was arrested by the police. At the police station while the driver was being interrogated and the taxi being checked, an angry mob from Ekumfi Eyisam with stones, clubs and knives came to the police station demanding the release of the driver. They vandalized the police station destroying furniture, documents and shattering louvre blades. A police officer suffered an injury as a result.

Supt. Augustine Mensah said he called for reinforcement and the group dispersed. The driver of the taxi and the impounded vehicle have been moved to the regional Police Headquarters in Cape Coast while attempts are being made to identify and arrest perpetrators of the act. The injured Police officer has also been treated and discharged.
